Charge Cards

A charge card is a pay-in-full product: its terms records show "See Pay Over Time APR" rather than a purchase-APR range. It shares the "card" keyword with credit cards, but it is a different product with different criteria — and it is not what our main ranking scores as a revolving credit card.

Why this page exists

Searches for the best card land on both products. In the terms records this desk restates, the clearest marker is the APR field itself: where a credit card shows a variable purchase-APR range (for example 19.24%–27.49% on Chase Sapphire Preferred®), the American Express® Gold Card and The American Express Platinum Card® show "See Pay Over Time APR" in the same field. Scoring both on one APR dimension would compare unlike products, so our method treats the split as a scored dimension (category fit) and flags charge-card entries on the main list instead of hiding the difference.

What a charge card is evaluated on

These are evaluation criteria, not product claims — we have not run a separate charge-card evaluation yet, and no figure here is financial advice.

FAQ

Is a charge card the same as a credit card?

No. A credit card revolves a balance at a stated purchase APR; a charge card is built around paying in full, and its terms records show "See Pay Over Time APR" instead of a purchase-APR range. Our main ranking covers consumer credit cards only, because scoring both on one APR scale would compare unlike products.

Why does this site flag charge cards instead of ranking them?

Category fit is a scored dimension in our method: charge cards are evaluated on pay-in-full terms, credit availability and fee structure — criteria that do not overlap with a revolving purchase APR. The American Express® Gold Card and The American Express Platinum Card® carry a charge-card flag on the main list for exactly this reason. When charge-card coverage warrants a separate run, it publishes under the same public-method rules.
